Dr. Vernette Carlson, medical director at UP Health System Hospice in Menominee, Mich., has found a very special way to bring comfort and joy to the hospice patients served in her area. On her own time, Dr. Carlson gathers supplies and makes beautiful wooden ornaments that she turns on a lathe. The ornaments are small enough to fit in the frailest of hands, but the love and compassion she puts into making these tiny gifts far exceed the size.

Dr. Carlson makes a point of meeting all of their hospice patients and leaving one of these unique ornaments. She partners with the UP team staff to make sure that their patients receive the exceptional care they deserve. These beautiful ornaments are an extension of the kindness and compassion Dr. Carlson demonstrates in her role as medical director.
